Student Pursues her Passion for Farming

At Rangi Ruru, every student’s pathway is uniquely their own. Enabling them to be their best takes not just dedication, effort, and perseverance but also holistic support. It’s a place where ākonga can feel at ease and grow into the best version of themselves, whatever that may look like. Whilst most students remain until the end of Year 13, then head off to tertiary education, a handful of students move to the beat of a different drum, following their heart and bravely venturing on paths less trodden. In the case of Year 12 student Sophie Orchard, her love for the land and a passion to learn more about farming sent her on a quest to discover a more hands-on education outside of the traditional tertiary institution.

Enter, Smedley Station is a 5,600-hectare commercial training farm in Central Hawkes Bay, offering one of the most sought-after agricultural cadetships in New Zealand. Smedley is a place where a small number of curious young farmers receive first-class, accredited and practical farming training. In fact, each year only 13 cadets are selected from a pool of 80-100 candidates.

Sophie’s passion for farming stems from her rural upbringing and her father’s career as a stock agent. Her decision to pursue this hands-on pathway was inspired by a female stock manager she met during a Rangi Ruru Young Farmers trip to Lees Valley Station. “I have always had a strong passion for farming,” Sophie shares. “I’m excited to embrace the opportunities at Smedley, learning all aspects of farming, meeting new people, and living on a large farm in the North Island.”

Since 1931, Smedley has been a launchpad for hundreds of aspiring farmers, offering comprehensive training in fencing, butchering, engineering, tractor work, mechanical repairs and livestock management. Cadets gain invaluable experiences working with sheep, cattle, deer, horses and dogs, preparing them for diverse careers in agriculture.

Demand for this unique programme remains high, and Sophie is ready to rise to the challenge on this iconic farm. “Rangi Ruru’s support as a boarding student over the past four years has helped set a strong platform and directed me on this pathway. I am very grateful to have been accepted into Smedley Station”, says Sophie.

As Sophie embarks on this exciting chapter, we celebrate her achievement and look forward to hearing about her adventures on the farm. Sophie’s determination to follow her passion exemplify the school’s ethos of empowering students to become the best version of themselves.

Congratulations, Sophie! Your entire Rangi Ruru whānau wish you every success.
