Discovering the World and Yourself
Each year, our exchange students cross borders, languages, and cultures, discovering not only the world beyond Aotearoa, but also new parts of themselves. This a powerful embodiment of Courage to Grow, a theme which speaks to the heart of our international exchange programmes.
To grow is to step beyond what is comfortable; to be courageous is to do so with openness, humility, and curiosity. International exchange is, at its core, an act of courage. Choosing to live with a host family, attend a new school, and navigate daily life in another language requires resilience and a willingness to take risks.
This year alone, Rangi Ruru students have embraced these challenges through exchanges with Lycée Mennais in France, Pestalozzi College in Argentina, and our sister school Yokohama Jogakuin in Japan, with an Indian exchange in Term 2. Whether student numbers are small or exchanges brief, the impact on each participant is profound.
For our senior students studying French or Spanish, the exchanges with France and Argentina offer authentic language immersion that cannot be replicated in a classroom. Lessons learned in grammar and vocabulary come alive in real conversations, friendships, and shared experiences.
One student reflected, “My exchange taught me the courage to make mistakes and keep going. Communicating in another language wasn’t always easy, but each challenge helped me become more resilient and open-minded.” Growth here is both linguistic and personal — learning to persist despite mistakes, and to see errors as part of the journey.
Our cultural exchanges with Japan, and soon India, offer a different but equally valuable form of growth. Students are invited into family life, traditions, and perspectives that broaden their understanding of the world. Living as both guest and ambassador, they learn empathy, adaptability, and gratitude.
As another student shared, “Going on this exchange gave me the chance to step outside my comfort zone and face unfamiliar situations with confidence. It showed my courage to grow by adapting to new environments, languages, embracing challenges, and giving me a chance to become more independent.”
Importantly, these are mutual exchanges. Our international students bring their own courage to Rangi Ruru, enriching our community through shared learning and connection. Classrooms, playgrounds, and homes become spaces of cultural exchange, reminding us that global citizenship begins with relationships.
Courage to Grow is not a moment, but a mindset. Through international exchange, our students learn that growth often happens on the other side of uncertainty. They return not only with improved language skills or cultural knowledge, but with confidence, independence, and a deeper sense of who they are.
The courage and growth forged through exchanges it reflected in the whakataukī, Whāia te iti kahurangi, ki te tūohu koe, me he maunga teitei | Pursue that which is precious, and if you must bow your head, let it be to a lofty mountain.
These experiences shape young women who are prepared to step forward, embrace challenge, and bow only to the highest mountains.
